WBC Convention at the Fairmont Grand Hotel, Ukraine

Boxing is dead? Really? Because I can barely keep up with the times of boxing and everything that’s going on. I need an assistant to coordinate all the boxing events, tell me where they are taking place, how to view them, and all the info on all the undercard fights! Imagine all the boxers you haven’t heard of yet! We want to know about them. They want you to know about them too!

The announcement that HBO Boxing is no longer an available format doesn’t come as a big jolt to the boxing world. For crying out loud its 2018, there’s only a hundred different ways to view a fight. Its just a matter of finding out whats easiest for you. If anything this is a huge opportunity for many.

This weekend there was SO much boxing going on around the world. Most importantly was the WBC 56th Convention held in the Ukrain at the swanky Fairmont Grand Hotel. It officially opened today in Kyiv (first time) and will last until Friday October 5th. The convention is a highly prestigious platform for athletes, coaches, referees, promoters and media representatives. This convention is huge and hosts over 160 country’s representatives and over 700 participants.  Along with a charity auction, and meet and greets with autographs, the convention will hold its annual meetings and seminars. The big names in attendance are WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, Wladimir Klitschko, Lennox Lewis, Julio Cesar Chavez, Tony Bellew, Oscar De La Hoya, and Evander Holyfield! Champs and deligates alike mingled at the cocktail party after the opening ceremony. Its a pretty incredible week filled with not only the creme de la creme of boxing, but a visit to the Klitschko Brothers Museum, and the Ukrainian Boxing Hall of Fame! Id say its a brilliant event to set some goals by to say the least!

Calum Smith Ali Trophy 2018 WBSS

Next up the Muhammad Ali Trophy! The Muhammad Ali Trophy is presented by The World Boxing Super Series. The WBSS features eight boxers from each weight class to compete in a knockout boxing competition. The prize fund holds a whopping $50 million dollars, with the champ taking home $10 million for themselves! All four sanctioned boxing entities, the  WBA, WBC, WBO and the IBF honor this tournament. Unlike traditional boxing the WBSS  has four judges. The fourth judges scorecard is used in the event that there’s a draw, no contest or a no decision ending. Calum Smith is the Champ this year. Smith is a 6’3″ British boxer they call “Mundo”.  The 28 year old has an orthodox stance with a record of 25-0. Eighteen of those wins were won by knockout. Smith has three brothers, all of whom are professional boxers.  Smith won the World Boxing Super Series final with a killer 7th round knockout over his apponent George Groves (28-20) also British.  This fight was the first professional Boxing match to ever take place in Saudi Arabia. It was incredible with Evander Holyfield watching ringside. Smith is now the WBA Super World Champion, and also holds Ring Magazines  Champion belt, and the WBC Diamond Title all in one month! True to Champion form Smith was quoted saying “I’m a big believer in my own ability”.  The fight was coined “Rowdy is Saudi” and was held at the King Abdullah Sports City Hall Saturday September 9, 2018.

Now, lets visit the Jorge Linares vs Abner Cotto match.  This was a good bet for sure. Taking place in Indio California, former 3 division world Champion  Jorge Linares (45-4) was very comfortable in his new light welterweight division debut! Coming at Abner Cotto (23-4) with a hard right, Linares knocked Cotto down in the 2nd round and again in the 3rd round, with Cotto holding on for dear life taking Linares down with him. The referee Raul Caiz stopped the fight.  Linares usually fights at 135 lbs. Linares will have to get used to heavier punches from his next likely apponents. Abner Cotto is Miguel Cottos cousin, who watched his cousin lose from ringside. This was a Goldenboy Media Production that was streaming on Facebook Watch.
